COMICS RESOURCES

Breaking into the Comics industry can take perseverance, practice and time. Comic Festivals are a great place to start as you will be rubbing shoulders with artists, publishers and other fans. Take with you handy A4 photocopies of your artwork (or your printed works), with your contact details clearly provided on each page. Take around 5-10 copies that you can leave with various editors and publishers at the Festivals. Also take some courage with you, don't be afraid of speaking to people and trying to find out who's who — however you can! Most publishers have their own stands. Don't neglect the small press publishers either — they won't pay you for any work, but if you're work is good, you can be sure they'll be the first to give you a chance. It means your work gets printed and circulated which means people see it and will provide invaluable experience. and a start to creating a printed portfolio.

COMICS SHOWS/FESTIVALS

In the UK, there are a handful of Comic Festivals and The British International Comics Show in Birmingham is now the biggest so it should be at the top of your list as it has all the major publishers:

BRITISH INTERNATIONAL COMICS SHOW IN BIRMINGHAM 3RD TO 4TH OCTOBER 2009 (we will have a table at this so please do come and find us)
http://www.thecomicsshow.co.uk/

LONDON FESTIVAL, usually November-time: http://www.paulgravett.com/comica/comica08/comica08.htm -- check out Paul Gravett's site for publications to buy too, he's an expert in the field.

BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL COMIC EXPO: http://www.comicexpo.net/   - around May-time

LONDON FILM AND COMIC CON - 18TH TO 19TH JULY 2009 — meet comic artists and people from films that have been made from comics
http://www.londonfilmandcomiccon.com/

LONDON MCM EXPO — USUALLY HAPPENS AROUND MAY time, missed it for this year
http://www.londonexpo.com/

SUBMISSIONS TO PUBLISHERS

If you have particular publishers you want to target, try seek them out on the internet and find out their submission policies — they all vary, as an example see Dark Horse and DC Comics below:

http://www.darkhorse.com/Company/Submissions
http://www.dccomics.com/about/?action=submissions

Hi8us will be attending BICS with participants from the COMIX scheme, so come and find us if you make it! Also, find MC² (Midlands Comics Collective) on Facebook — this group is made up of people who have graduated from our schemes, plus other comic talent, professional and non-professional, their website is: www.comicscollective.co.uk
